Lax Criminal and Traffic Laws in Maldives

In Maldives people who dissobey the few traffic laws there are do not seem to get into much trouble no matter what the offence... even if people get hurt.

Just recently three people were racing their motorcycles on the streets of Male' (the capital) and crashed into a stationary motorcycle on which my uncle and son were sitting. My uncle (younger tham me) recieved a hairline fracture in his leg and my 6 year old son had to get four stitches on his knee. One of the guys involved fled the scene and was caught later.

What is going to happen to these irresponsible racers? As far as I can tell the most that will probably happen is that they will loose thier liscence. I feel like the police here need to enforce the few traffic laws that there are, and there should be more severe punishments for hit and runs... especially when people get hurt. If people are not held accountable for their actions in a manner that befits the crime ... how can here be any semblance of peacufulness and safety?
